Gmail push on iPhone? Meet GPush

The arrival of push notification in Apple’s 3.0 iPhone software whipped up excitement, though its real-world application still left users wanting more. On Monday, Tiverias Apps released GPush (iTunes link), a small (0.3MB), ninety nine cent application that fills in a gap with push notification for your Gmail account.

GPush alerts you to incoming Gmail messages with a red icon badge, a chime, and a semi-transparent alert window that reads the sender’s name and the subject line. (You can change these in the Notification settings.) The application interface itself does little, apart from collecting your login information once, and manually reregistering your credentials. All the rest works behind the scenes.

‘PS3 Slim’ rumor fervor hard to fathom

Is this the new PS3 Slim? Rumors have it Sony may unveil such a device at the Gamescon show in Germany Tuesday. On the other hand, it may all be fanboy-driven fervor with no substance. Either way, to CNET News reporter Daniel Terdiman, the excitement is unlikely to be matched by the reality of anything Sony may introduce.

While all new technology product rumors have to be taken with a grain of salt, you can sometimes tell–often by the volume of online chatter about a particular morsel–that one is more likely to turn out to be true.

That seems to be the case with the so-called “PS3 Slim,” a rumored new PlayStation 3 form factor that could well be on the horizon. And if the latest slew of blog and forum posts are right, there’s a pretty good chance Sony will formally announce the new console Tuesday at the Gamescon conference in Cologne, Germany.

That may be true, and, of course, it may not. But what I want to know is why so many people seem to be so excited about this as-yet-unseen console? After all, the PS3–once thought by many to be the most likely winner of the next-generation console wars between Sony, Microsoft (with its Xbox 360), and Nintendo (with its Wii)–has lagged far behind its competitors.

T-Mobile G1 Might Not Be Able To Use Future Google Android Updates

One of the T-Mobile G1’s most appealing features is that its Android OS can be upgraded to take advantage of new updates issued by Google. Allegedly due to limited system memory, the G1 may have reached its ceiling with the latest “Cupcake” version of Android OS. According to an Android engineer’s Twitter page:

“As much as I’m hoping that it’ll be possible to somehow continue updating the G1, I can’t promise anything.”

When the G1 was first released, the OS was raw and not quite ready for prime time. A lot of customers bought the phone anyway, banking on Google to improve the OS with updates. This has to be tremendously disappointing news for G1 owners. Android is getting better and better all the time, but there’s a chance G1 owners will not be able to enjoy the “Donut” and “Eclair” updates for Android. Of course this Android engineer could be totally wrong and there might be a way for G1s to continue to receive updates.

Did Borders Reveal The “Apple iPAD?”

A survey sent to “friends” of Borders Books and Music (and spotted by an eagle-eyed editor at MacLife) asks if consumers plan on buying an “Apple IPAD (Large Screen Reading Device) this year.”

Hmm… interesting. Could this iPAD be another name for the much-rumored Apple Tablet supposedly to be announced imminently? Is a book reader part of the tablet’s bag of tricks? Could Borders have slipped up and mentioned the name of the un-announced product? Or maybe the company made a mistake, and they meant iPod. The company has previously mis-named the iPod Touch the “Apple iTouch,” after all.

I’m old-school when it comes to books. I like paper. But I realize that many, many people with literary leanings are hopping on the Kindle or Amazon Reader bandwagons. Do you think Apple will deliver a better book-reading experience, if that is what they’re planning to do? Do you read at all?

Modder Creates 1-inch Thick XBox

We may not have seen any real photos of the rumored PS3 Slim, but I can bring you a pic of a genuine streamlined Xbox. The Xbox Micro was created by modder Bandit5317, and features all the features of the original Xbox…except a DVD drive. The best use of this one-of-a-kind console is as of a media extender — it contains a 320GB hard-drive for all your media service needs.

I think you will agree that the emaciated Xbox is about 8,000 times slicker than the original, which is roughly the size, shape and weight of a cinderblock. I can’t believe I actually had one of those in my entertainment case!

What do you think the ugliest console ever made was? I think the original Xbox is in the running, but, the real winner is Nintendo Virtual Boy.
